چکیده

In a multihop wireless mesh network, interference among links has a significant impact on the link capacity. Thus, characterizing the interference is critical in understanding and improving the performance of the network. A common scenario in a mesh network is the existence of multiple interferers. Modeling the effect of multiple interferers is challenging as the interference level not only depends upon the number of interferers but also on their relative positions. In this work, we present a measurement based interference model that captures the effect of multiple interferers. The interference model consists of metrics that determines the transmission capacity at the sender and collision probability at receiver in presence of interferers. The presented interference model can predict the capacity of any link in the mesh network using O(n) measurements.

Interference-Aware and Cluster Based Multicast Routing in Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

Multicast routing is one of the most important services in Multi Radio Multi Channel (MRMC) Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN). Multicast routing performance in WMNs could be improved by choosing the best routes and the routes that have minimum interference to reach multicast receivers. In this paper we want to address the multicast routing problem for a given channel assignment in WMNs. The channels...

Characterizing Interference in Wireless Mesh Networks

of thesis entitled: Characterizing Interference in Wireless Mesh Networks Submitted by HUI, Ka Hung for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in August 2007 The relationship between interference and capacity has been a main focus in the study of wireless mesh networks. To find out the capacity of a wireless mesh network, we have to accurately model the interf...

Analysis and Measurements of the Throughput in IEEE 802.11 Mesh Networks

It is well-known that the throughput of wireless mesh networks without frequency re-use decreases as O(1/N), where N is the number of nodes in the network. In this paper we build on this result and obtain expressions for calculating the throughput in IEEE 802.11-based mesh networks without interference. Both expressions for single-frequency and multifrequency mesh networks are obtained. We comp...

Enhancing Efficiency and Effectiveness of 802.11 MAC in Wireless Mesh Networks

The 802.11 MAC protocol is widely used in wireless mesh networks. However, with multi-hop transmissions prevalent in such networks, neither the current 802.11 DCF basic scheme nor the RTS/CTS scheme can achieve full utilization of network capacity for various reasons. First, the 802.11 MAC provides low spatial reuse (low parallelism of transmissions). Second, the collision avoidance mechanism i...

Contention- and Interference-Aware Flow-Based Routing in Wireless Mesh Networks: Design and Evaluation of a Novel Routing Metric

As the popularity of IEEE 802.11-based Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) grows, end users of these environments demand better performance and quality of service (QoS). However, the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of the IEEE 802.11 standard was not initially designed to provide either multihop or QoS capabilities. Therefore, the performance of IEEE 802.11-based WMNs is not optimal. One approach t...
